Garrett Harbron on the science of retirement
It was a privilege and a pleasure for the team at Regis Media to be asked to film last week’s Science of Retirement Conference in London.
For those who aren’t aware of it, the event has been running for four years now and is organised by Abraham Okusanya at FinalytiQ. I’m full of admiration for Abraham who, like me, firmly believes in applying an evidence-based approach in the financial industry and, in particular, the financial advice profession. This year’s conference, which included the legendary Nick Murray as headline speaker, was the best yet.
Most serious research into wealth management focuses on the so-called accumulation phase. But just as important, and in many ways, more problematic, is the decumulation phase — ensuring that the client makes the most of their wealth in retirement, without running out of money and having to rely on their family for financial support in old age.
Last week’s conference brought together experts from all over the UK, and also from continental Europe and the United States, who have devoted themselves to this area of expertise.
One of the speakers on the day was Garrett Harbron, an investment strategist with Vanguard Asset Management. Garrett has recently relocated from Arizona to London, where he heads a team of strategists developing Vanguard’s retirement methodology in the UK.
In this interview for the RockWealth blog, Garrett explains the latest developments in retirement strategy and the different options open to retirees:
